OUT OF THE DARK - Photographs 1979 - 2013 and FACING THE LIGHT - Portraits 1983 - 2009 are companion books. From OUT OF THE DARK published in 2014, FACING THE LIGHT emerged two years later, drawing on some of the various responses to the earlier work. OUT OF THE DARK opens in 2013, and the final "chapter" closes with images taken in 1979, whilst FACING THE LIGHT starts with a portrait from 1983 and finishes with one from 2009. The opening "chapter" in the first book is shot using only colour film and a variety of artificial lighting sources. In the final "chapter" black and white film pushed to 1600 ASA and exposed in available lighting conditions is the option chosen. FACING THE LIGHT opens in this manner using available light, but a gradual conversion to artificial lighting occurs after 1987. In the new book Chris Kline photographed at Royal Talbot Rehabilitation Centre rounds off the "chapter" at Austin Health. OUT OF THE DARK mentions visiting the three campuses but there was not one image from Royal Talbot! Furthermore, Heinz and Peter Gerlach from BUILDING A COUNTRY 1988 - 1991 reference GERMAN IMMIGRANTS AND THEIR DESCENDANTS IN VICTORIA: another in the group represented in that project. A continuing focus on and respect for multicultural Australia remains undiminished therefore the presentation in "chapter" CELEBRATIONS AND FESTIVALS 1989 - 2001. In the opening "chapter" four portraits from Broome add to the three in OUT OF THE DARK, at this point representing Western Australia. Jennifer Earney breaks the rhythm of Sydney Road with this earlier work produced in Richmond. Her inclusion here complements the food themed ending to this body of work. The collaboration between Morag Loh and myself for the ABC FRIENDS presents a completed series. The sole "chapter" in both books is presented in this way.
